Night of Champions is tomorrow, so I’ve decided to post my predictions so I can look back and see how terribly wrong I was about the event.
I’m just some guy who watches wrestling, so I have no insider knowledge or anything like that. This is just what I think might go down on Sunday night.
WWE Night of Champions 2015 – Predictions
Neville / The Lucha Dragons vs. Stardust / The Ascension
I am excited to see where this one goes. I like the pairing of Stardust and The Ascension as it makes way more sense than pairing Stardust with Barrett ever did. Considering these two teams haven’t properly faced off yet, I can see this match being full of entertaining spots. It is on the pre-show so I don’t expect it to go much longer than eight minutes or so, but still this could turn out to be a good match.
Prediction: I’m going to go with Stardust / The Ascension. Most likely by some form of heel antics. I don’t see them building up this new alliance just to have them lose at the PPV.
Rusev (w/ Summer Rae) vs. Dolph Ziggler
Ugh. I seriously hope whatever happens here definitively ends this story line and we can finally move on. This feud has been the bane of my recaps the past few weeks and I seriously hope this program does not get extended by another PPV cycle. Considering Lana is out for the rest of the year, this story line needs to come to a swift end and this match should be that swift end. Dolph and Summer can go off and do stuff I’ll dedicate one sentence that ends in “and I don’t care” to in my recap and Rusev can begin to build a new character without the shackles of all of this garbage.
Prediction: It seems obvious that Summer Rae will turn on Rusev and align with Ziggler. Considering Lana is out, this should hopefully (praying to the wrestling Gods here) end this feud for now. I do see value in a returning Lana realigning with Rusev against them, but considering that is months away, give Ziggler the cheap win here and please move Rusev on to a new program that is not this terrible.
The New Day vs. The Dudley Boyz (Tag Team Championship Match)
Considering the New Day have held the titles twice now, I don’t see them retaining here. The insta-push WWE has given the Dudleys seems like it will culminate in a title victory here. Since Cesaro / Kidd, the titles have moved around a few times already so it seems to jive with the plans that WWE has for the division. If not on Sunday, I’ll be surprised if the Dudleys don’t win in a rematch at Hell in Cell in October.
Prediction: Dudleys beat the numbers game and come out as new champions. I don’t see anyone in New Day going through the tables though. I think they’re going to save that one for something down the road.
Kevin Owens vs. Ryback (Intercontinental Championship Match)
Kevin Owens really needs a win here to establish himself on the main roster. I was hoping they’d pull the trigger and have him eventually beat John Cena for the U.S. Title, but this would work as well. Ryback has been a snooze of a champion due to him being injured and then saddled with this bizarre Big Show / Miz feud triangle that never really left the ground. Ryback retaining does absolutely nothing for the title’s profile, whereas Owens has had consistently good matches and WWE could instantly plug him into a feud, with say, Cesaro for the belt.
Prediction: Kevin Owens wins, Ryback goes back to his vision boards and they find something else for him to do that doesn’t involve the Big Show.
Nikki Bella vs. Charlotte (Diva Championship Match)
They sucked all of the excitement and steam out of this match on RAW. Even if they have Charlotte completely dominate Nikki and she taps her out for the win, it seems like a pyrrhic victory for the “Diva Revolution”. Nikki Bella retaining here is perhaps the worst thing that can happen. They’ve already had her beat AJ Lee’s record so they “won” that battle. Continuing on with the status quo, even during this supposed revolution, would do no favors to any of the women competing in the division. Charlotte winning is the best outcome, but even that has been tainted. If they don’t immediately bust up PCB, BAD and Team Bella after this match it will just seem like more of the same.
Prediction: Charlotte wins. If they don’t immediately escalate this into a Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks feud or turn either Paige or Becky against her we’re still treading water. Nikki should get her “rematch” and it should be a second swift and decisive victory and the entire division can move on to the bigger and better things most of the women in the division are capable of doing.
The Wyatt Family vs. Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, & ???
I’m still hoping the third man is Hollywood Hulk Hogan. Okay, in all seriousness I’m not entirely sure who the third guy is going to be. I’ve seen a lot of speculation that seems implausible (The Rock) or impossible (Seth Rollins). As awesome as a reformed Shield would be here, no chance of that happening. The Rock seems at least slightly more realistic of an option, especially due to them attempting to tie him to Roman Reigns back during that cringe worthy Royal Rumble victory, but I just don’t see them bringing him in at a B-PPV in a non-main event match. Many have speculated Daniel Bryan, which could work due to his past connections with the Wyatts, but I’m still on the fence with that since as far as I’ve read he’s still on the inactive list. They’ve ruled out Orton and Jimmy Uso and I seriously doubt a returning Erick Rowan is the big mystery man. I honestly don’t know who this is going to be, but it’s going to have to somehow counter the, so far, unstoppable Braun Strowman.
Prediction: Reigns, Ambrose, and the Hulkster win. Seriously, I don’t see the Wyatts winning here no matter who the secret partner ends up being.
John Cena vs. Seth Rollins (U.S. Championship Match)
The only reason I can see that Cena isn’t still holding the belt is so WWE could get the publicity for the Jon Stewart run-in at Summerslam. Cena needs to win here, as painful as that is to say, because at least he was doing something with the U.S. Title. With Rollins, it’s essentially a prop for him to take out to the ring and he’s a division killer. Putting it back on Cena makes the most sense and he can then eventually do the honors for someone who really needs the push with the title.
Prediction: Cena Wins, LOL.
Seth Rollins va. Sting (WWE Championship Match)
Oh boy. I really feel this match shouldn’t be happening. Any outcome seems less than ideal. Let’s stay Rollins wins, clean or otherwise. Sting is now 0-2 and his return seems utterly pointless. He’s done press saying he’s just back to put people over, but that doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense. His entire thing about not coming to the WWE was that he was afraid they were going to job him out and ruin his legacy. So, why now would he suddenly be okay with that?
Let’s say Sting wins. You’ve just thrown Rollins into a heat void, especially if they do the right thing and take away the U.S. Title earlier in the night. WWE has a 56-year-old champion who has worked something like three matches in the past year and a half.
I hate to say it, but the most compelling and best (?) outcome would be to have Sheamus cash in towards the end of the match and take the title via his Money in the Bank opportunity. That would protect a weakened Rollins who’d have had to wrestle two matches in one night, and protect Sting for not losing directly to Rollins. It’d be a lazy rerun of the WrestleMania main event, but it may be one way to salvage this main event. I doubt that will happen though as they’ve teased Sheamus cashing in way too much lately on TV.
Prediction: Rollins beats the new highly paid jobber to the stars, Sting. No Sheamus cash in. And no, Undertaker doesn’t appear and punch anyone in the junk either.
