WWE NXT 02/06/13 is advertised as featuring the next round of the NXT Tag Team Championship Tournament. Beyond that? Conor O’Brian, previously of the Ascension (and eventually of the Ascension again), is also set to re-debut and likely have some form of interaction with NXT Champion, Big E Langston. Let’s get to the recap!
WWE NXT 02/06/13 Recap
WWE. Then. Now. Forever. We open with a video package highlighting the NXT Tag Team Championship tournament.
Slightly updated opening credits and we’re taped from Full Sail. Tony welcomes us to the show and Kassius Ohno’s music hits. Ohno’s out with Leo Kruger for the first semi-final tag match. Neville’s (?) music hits and he’s out with Oliver Grey. Regal calls Neville “Aaron Neville” but immediately realizes it and covers by saying he’s good friends with the singer. Regal as GM is awesome, but I really do miss Regal on commentary.
Match #1: Kassius Ohno & Leo Kruger vs. Oliver Grey & Adrian Neville (NXT Tag Team Championship Tournament – Semi-Final Match)
Match of the week. We get a two-part match, where Grey and Neville (the faces) put Ohno in peril for nearly as long as the second semi-final tag match runs. After a sunset flip by Grey goes awry, Ohno is able to tag in Kruger and then we go to the standard babyface (Grey) going in peril to set up the hot tag finish to Neville. The long “abdominal stretch, tag, abdominal stretch, repeat” sequence dragged on a bit, but Neville going on fire and hitting Ohno with the Red Arrow to win the match makes up for that and then some.
Verdict: Thumbs Up – All four guys did a great job and this reminded me again how much I miss Neville.
Next, we see Summer Rae attacking Paige from last week. Meanwhile, Renee is backstage with Summer. The promo Summer cuts essentially says she’s tired of just being the ring announcer and that she’s the prettiest “diva” at NXT. Summer says Paige is “ghastly” while Summer is the hottest thing in all of WWE.
Later tonight? The second semi final tag match featuring Bo Dallas & Michael McGillicutty vs. the Wyatt Family.
Also, later tonight? Exclusive footage from the Royal Rumble Fan Fest tournament.
After no break, some wrestling fans show up to Full Sail for a wrestling show.
Meanwhile, Mike Dalton is already in the ring. Conor O’Brian is out next to new music but, essentially, the original Ascension entrance. Saxton even calls him “The Ascension – Conor O’Brian”.
Match #2: Conor O’Brian vs. Mike Dalton
Hey there, Tyler Breeze! Conor obliterates Dalton and puts him away with a leg drop to the back of Dalton’s head. Commentary says that the move is called “The Fall of Man”. Hmm, same look. Same presentation. Same finisher name. Team name still in his name. I have to wonder if there was already a pitch to get Conor teamed up with Rick Victor – because this singles push seems really thrown together to kill some time and keep him on TV.
Verdict: Thumbs In The Middle – Conor looks great, but this really feels weird having no real direction or any reason for Conor suddenly being by himself. Yes, I know they fired Cameron – but at least give us some kayfabe reason why Conor’s solo now.
Post-match, Conor starts demanding a five count. The ref won’t give it to him, so he does it himself. This causes Big E’s music to hit. Big E is out (w/ the NXT Championship) and heads to the ring. Dalton receives a Big Ending and Big E leaves up the ramp while Conor just watches all of this.
Meanwhile backstage, Paige is freaking out at Dusty over the promo Summer Rae cut on her earlier. Paige demands a match with Summer Rae next week so she can “rip Summer’s lips off”. If Dusty doesn’t grant Paige the match? Paige says there will be no NXT next week. I guess Dusty implicitly agrees to the match and Paige storms out and runs into Sasha Banks. Dusty has called Sasha into his office (?) to give her another “secret admirer” note that was left for her. This note mentions how next week is Valentine’s Day (the 13th… but close enough I guess) and that they want to “show their affection” with “PDA”. Sasha is super into this and leaves excited. I have a terrible feeling about this angle.
Later tonight? The Miztourage takes on the Bludgeon Brothers in the main event.
Up next? Royal Rumble Fan Fest Tournament footage.
Next, we get said video package on the Royal Rumble Fan Fest Tournament. The winner of the eight man tournament gets a spot in the Royal Rumble match. We see a decent amount of footage of each match and learn that Bo Dallas beat Leo Kruger in the finals. Considering I don’t recall Bo Dallas winning the 2013 Royal Rumble and main eventing WrestleMania that year – I’m guess he was unceremoniously eliminated by Kane or the Big Show (I was wrong, he was eliminated by Wade Barrett).
Meanwhile, Bo is backstage prepping for the main event when Bray Wyatt wanders in. Bray congratulates Bo on the tournament win at the Fan Fest. Bo says it was cool beating Bray’s “boy” Luke Harper in that tournament and even cooler that he gets to beat Harper again in the tag tournament tonight. Bo suggests that “time might be up” for the Wyatt Family and leaves. Bray finds this funny and laughs.
Up next? Main event!
Back from break, Bo and McGillicutty are out first to Bo’s music. Bray’s music hits next and he’s out with Harper and Rowan (w/ rocking chair). The rocking chair is set up on the ramp so Bray can watch from there.
Match #3: Bo Dallas & Michael McGillicutty vs. Luke Harper & Erick Rowan (w/ Bray Wyatt) (NXT Tag Team Championship Tournament – Semi-Final Match)
A short match which is focused on “brawler” moves. Not terrible by any stretch, but it seems pretty obvious the Wyatts are going over here and they do. Of course, it takes a distraction from Bray that somehow draws the ref completely out of the ring to do it though. The distraction causes the ref to miss McGillicutty roll up Rowan (the legal man) and eat a Discus Clothesline from Harper (the illegal man).
Verdict: Thumbs In The Middle – “Cheap Heel Victory 101” stuff here. Not super novel or exciting, but it gets the job done, and our tag team tourney finals are set for next week.
Post-match, Bray heads to the ring and offers Bo a hand (and a spot in the Family?). Bo rejects the handshake. Bray leaves and sends Harper and Rowan to advance on the ring. While Bo is distracted by them in the corner, Bray hits the ring and attacks Bo from behind. After ballroom dancing with Bo’s unconscious body, Bray hits the Sister Abigail on him.
We go off the air on Bray sitting back down in his rocking chair with Harper and Rowan flanking him.
Next week? Paige vs. Summer Rae and the first NXT Tag Team Champions will be crowned!
