Things are back to normal at Full Sail after last week’s main roster celebrity appearance by Chris Jericho. While the bulk of the WWE NXT 05/08/13 card is a mystery – we do know that the Wyatt Family are getting a shot at NXT Tag gold as Adrian Neville will finally be defending the NXT Tag Team Championship with makeshift partner Bo Dallas. Let’s get to the recap!
WWE NXT 05/08/13 Recap
WWE. Then. Now. Forever. Cold open on a dramatic video package explaining the NXT Tag Team Championship situation.
Standard NXT opening credits and we’re taped from Full Sail. Damien Sandow’s music hits and Tony welcomes us to the show. Sandow heads to the ring and doesn’t cut a promo as he’ll be saving that for the post-match segment. Some random music hits and Baron Corbin is out next. Corbin has short hair and is super high energy. It’s weird.
Match #1: Damien Sandow vs. Baron Corbin
Commentary plays up Corbin’s past in football and Baron’s only real offense comes from some shoulder tackles. Sandow goes over clean with the Silencer. Not much to see here.
Verdict: Thumbs In The Middle – I had no idea Corbin’s TV debut was way back in 2013. I suppose this succeeded in getting him on TV and the post-match sets up something for the main event picture so it’s not a complete waste of time.
Post-match, Sandow cuts a promo and challenges Big E Langston to a NXT Championship match. “You’re welcome”.
Meanwhile, Adrian Neville is backstage getting ready and Bo Dallas appears. Bo is ready to give Neville “80%” tonight. You see, “80%” of Bo Dallas is equal to “110%” of anyone else. Bo is just kidding around and he’s honored to defend the tag straps with Neville tonight.
Up next? Paige vs. Bayley.
Back from break, Paige’s music hits and she’s out. Already in the ring? Bayley.
Match #2: Paige vs. Bayley
Another match where Paige is super over so, like with Emma, Bayley is working vaguely heel. It feels weird watching this in hindsight, but probably didn’t feel so weird watching this at the time. This is a good match – especially considering it’s merely an excuse to get to a post-match segment to further the Summer Rae / Paige program. Bayley dishes out suplexes and the entire match isn’t just roll ups and counters. Paige goes on a run that ends with a Paige Turner to get the win.
Verdict: Thumbs Up – This felt more in line with the types of women’s division matches we see on weekly NXT in present day. I’m into it.
Post-match, Paige celebrates and Summer Rae runs out and takes out Paige from behind.
Meanwhile, Tom Phillips is backstage with Big E Langston. Before Big E can tell us about his yo-yo collection, Sandow interrupts and wants to formally challenge Big E for the title. Big E gives Sandow a math problem that ends with the number five being the result. Sandow and Big E keep saying “five” until Sandow realizes what is going on.
Later tonight? Adrian Neville and Bo Dallas defend the NXT Tag Team Championship against the Wyatt Family.
After no break, Briley Pierce is in the ring. Tony tells us that Briley is Dolph Ziggler’s brother. Regal deadpans “Why is his last name ‘Pierce’ then?”. Good stuff. Sakamoto is out next.
Match #3: Briley Pierce vs. Sakamoto
Barely a minute into this match Conor O’Brian runs in and takes out both guys. The ref throws the match out.
Verdict: Thumbs In The Middle – Conor destroying people is fun I guess.
Post-match, Conor continues to lay waste to both guys in the ring.
Meanwhile, Renee is backstage talking to Natalya about Total Divas. Summer interrupts and tells us that the real story is why she attacked Paige. Summer did the sneak attack because everyone at NXT is jealous of her because she’s on Raw and SmackDown now. Nattie cuts in and says she’d love to have a match with her next week. Summer calls her “little miss reality star”, makes some reference to Hornswoggle (yeah, I’m didn’t watch WWE back then so… no context for this guy), and says next week she’ll expose Nattie for being a “total freak”.
Later tonight? Tag team match.
Back from break, Renee is backstage with Briley and Sakamoto. Briley threatens Conor and Sakamoto challenges Conor to a two on one handicap match for next week in broken English. I don’t think Briley realizes he’s in said match though.
Next, Kassius Ohno’s music hits and he’s out. Already in the ring? Camacho.
Match #4: Kassius Ohno vs. Camacho
This match got way too much time for what it was. Ohno starts out with some mat wrestling and strikes. Camacho goes on an extended run of offense. Eventually, Ohno takes the advantage back and taps Camacho out with the Kassius Klutch. Considering this was another match really only here for the post-match angle this one really felt like it dragged on way too long.
Verdict: Thumbs Down – I didn’t like how long this match felt. Ohno winning was fine though since it gets him a win back after losing to Regal.
Post-match, Ohno gets a mic and cuts a promo saying he has something to get off his chest. He says the last few months were a blur and he apologizes to William Regal. The Wyatt Family music immediately hits and Harper and Rowan are out. They stare at Ohno as they head to the ring. Ohno turns around and Bray is standing there. Another stare down and then Bray walks off saying he means Ohno no harm. As Ohno starts to head to the back he’s jumped from behind by Harper and Rowan. Bray calls them off and then hits Ohno with a Sister Abigail on the stage. Harper says “Yeah” a lot while this happens and the on-screen captions transcribed it!
Back from break, next week? Big E Langston vs. Damien Sandow for the NXT Championship.
Meanwhile, the Wyatt Family have made their way to the ring. Adrian Neville is out first for the champs. Bo Dallas is out last.
Match #5: Adrian Neville & Bo Dallas (c) vs. The Wyatt Family (w/ Bray Wyatt) (NXT Tag Team Championship Match)
Well, Bo’s “80%” sure wasn’t enough. The match falls into the standard “face goes in peril” formula, eventually Neville gets the hot tag, hits Harper with the Red Arrow, but Rowan breaks up the three count. From there, we get Neville in peril to build up to a Bo Dallas hot tag comeback. Bo goes on a run, including a spear, but Rowan shoves Bo into the ropes and he knocks Neville down to the floor effectively taking Neville out of the match. Rowan hits a big boot, tags in Harper, and Bo eats a Discus Clothesline. 3 count. New tag champs!
Verdict: Thumbs Up – Not a bad Plan B for the tag division. It sure took forever though to get the titles off of Neville after Grey’s injury though. Either way, the titles on the Wyatts feels right and I’m sure this result will set up something between Neville and Dallas.
We go off the air on Bray Wyatt raising Harper and Rowan’s hands in the ring.
