WWE NXT 05/29/13 features a “historic announcement from Stephanie McMahon”, which just has to be the tournament to crown the first NXT Women’s Champion. Also on tap for this week is a Battle Royal to determine the next contender for Big E Langston’s NXT Championship. Who will be the next to challenge Mr. Five Count? Let’s find out!
WWE NXT 05/29/13 Recap
WWE. Then. Now. Forever. Standard NXT opening credits and we’re taped from Full Sail. Tom Phillips welcomes us to the show and the Wyatt Family music hits. Harper and Rowan are out (without Bray). Already in the ring? Travis Tyler and Sawyer Fulton. Replacing Regal tonight on commentary? Brad Maddox.
Match #1: Wyatt Family vs. Travis Tyler & Sawyer Fulton
Harper and Rowan toy with Tyler and Harper even lets him make a tag to Fulton. It doesn’t matter, as Harper quickly puts Fulton away with a Discus Clothesline.
Verdict: Thumbs In The Middle – They’re the champs so it’s fine, I guess.
Post-match, Harper wanders around the ring saying “yeah” a lot. And, yes, WWE Network added him saying “yeah” to the captions.
Later tonight? A 18 Man Battle Royal to determine the number one contender to the NXT Championship.
Up next? Stephanie McMahon makes a historic announcement.
Back from break, we see a pre-tape with Stephanie McMahon – likely from Stamford – where she announces the NXT Women’s Championship. We see the belt on a table and Stephanie says that the tournament to crown the first champion begins next week. FINALLY!
Next, Emma’s music hits and she’s out. She has bubbles during her entrance now and attempts to pop them with her hands while she’s dancing to the ring. Audrey Marie’s music hits and she heads to the ring.
Match #2: Audrey Marie vs. Emma
Match of the week. It’s “awkward dancing Emma” but she does a lot of quick escapes to counter Audrey who is strangely being featured as a power wrestler here. After several roll up and backslide counters get 2, Emma hits her signature crossbody in the corner to set up the Emma Lock. Audrey Marie taps out.
Verdict: Thumbs Up – Kind of short, but on a show with a Battle Royal and several squash matches, this felt like it had the most meat to it. They’re clearly starting to position Emma as a contender in the upcoming refresh of the division.
Meanwhile, Renee Young is backstage with Scott Dawson and Garrett Dylan. She starts to interview them, but Sylvester Lefort enters, says he’s their manager, and it’s time to head to the ring.
Later tonight? Battle Royal!
After no break, Dawson and Dylan (D Squared, apparently) head to the ring with Sylvester Lefort. Dylan drinks BBQ sauce out of a bottle. Already in the ring? Brandon Traven & Jake Carter (who get no chyron and no mention until the match starts).
Match #3: D Squared (w/ Sylvester Lefort) vs. Jake Carter & Brandon Traven
Another squash match to establish this new team. Kind of surprised to see Carter working in this spot since he used to be in the opening credits, but I imagine he’s likely on the way out of NXT at this point. Dawson and Dylan hit a tandem finisher that features a crisp spinebuster from Dawson. Not bad. I wonder what causes this team to end?
Verdict: Thumbs In The Middle – Another quick squash, but Dawson looked really good in the match.
Up next? Big E Langston vs. Derrick Bateman in a non-title match.
Back from break, Bateman’s music hits and he’s out with a new look. He’s not quite EC3 yet, but he’s getting there. Big E is out next.
Match #4: Derrick Bateman vs. Big E Langston
Bateman gets in a flurry of offense and is then destroyed by Big E. I’m assuming this is Bateman’s last match with WWE before leaving for TNA. Big E hits the Big Ending for the win.
Verdict: Thumbs In The Middle – Not much of a match, but a clever way to get Big E out there for the main event that follows.
Post-match, Bateman eats another Big Ending and Big E counts to five.
Next week? Kassius Ohno & Corey Graves team up to face the Wyatt Family.
Back from break, Big E has joined the commentary team. Most of the men in the Battle Royal are already in the ring. Graves, Wyatt, Ohno, Neville, and Dallas all get entrances.
Match #5: 18 Man Battle Royal to Determine the Number One Contender for the NXT Championship
The elimination order is as follows: Sakamoto, Briley Pierce, Curt Hawkins, Alexander Rusev (the first time we’ve seen him!), Baron Corbin, Knuckles Madsen, Mojo Rawley, Yoshi Tatsu, Dante Dash, Aiden English, Sami Zayn, Mason Ryan, Conor O’Brian, Kassius Ohno, Corey Graves, Bray Wyatt, and Adrian Neville.
So, Bo Dallas wins it by blocking a Red Arrow from Neville and tossing Neville out. The final two of Neville and Bo was obviously where this was going to go and since I knew both guys were former NXT Champions going into these old recaps I wasn’t exactly sure who had the title first. Seems like it’ll be Bo taking the belt from Big E since they went out of their way to refer to Big E as a “main roster Superstar” during his match with Bateman tonight. The only other thing of note here is that Mason Ryan eliminated the first 11 guys in this Battle Royal. They seem to be positioning him in a Batista style role at NXT so I’m curious how this ends considering he was long gone by the time I initially started watching this show in 2015.
Verdict: Thumbs Up – I’m always a fan of Battle Royals so this was a fun watch. Bo as the winner is fine since he’s been incredibly entertaining since drifting towards being a heel.
We go off the air on Bo Dallas celebrating in the ring.
