WWE NXT 07/11/18 will feature the Undisputed Era getting their rematch with Moustache Mountain for the NXT Tag Team Championships. Also on tap for this week? Kairi Sane takes on Vanessa Bourne and Aleister Black will be “live”. It’s been a week… so let’s get to the recap!
WWE NXT 07/11/18 Recap
WWE. Then. Now. Forever. We open with a hype video for tonight’s NXT Tag Team Championship match.
Standard NXT opening credits and we’re taped (originally taped 06/21/18) from Full Sail. Mauro welcomes us to the show and the Undisputed Era’s music hits. Adam Cole is out alone. Danny Burch’s music hits next and he’s out.
Match #1: Adam Cole vs. Danny Burch
The way this match went down (when added to Oney Lorcan’s injury) has me a bit worried about Danny Burch. Granted, Cole had to work a bit to pick up the clean win here – it was far from a squash match. But, I still felt like this being non-title meant Burch would pick up a win and factor into some future multi-man scenario around the North American title. Instead, Cole puts Burch away with the Last Shot. Hmm.
Verdict: Thumbs In The Middle – Cole feels more like a prop in the tag division right now so hopefully they have him defend the title at TakeOver this time. I realize that with so many titles now it’s tricky. Also, I’m hoping at the very least Burch gets used in the UK NXT because he’s too good of a talent to waste.
“Earlier today”, Candice is outside and she’s… walking. Someone off camera is talking to her until she discovers Shayna Baszler standing against a production truck. They have words that end in Candice slapping Baszler. From there it’s on and we get a pull apart between them.
Later tonight? Aleister Black is here and he’ll… be… live!
Up next? Kairi Sane takes on Vanessa Borne.
Meanwhile, Cathy Kelley is backstage with Dakota Kai. Dakota says she’s working her way back up through the division so she can get another shot at Shayna. Lacey Evans enters and says that if Kai’s “dirty paws” ever got the title she’d just bring it down. NXT needs a woman of class, confidence, and sophistication as the champion – all traits that Kai doesn’t have. Kai responds by saying she wants to kick the class off Lacey’s face next week.
Back in the arena, Vanessa Borne is out to what I think is some new music. Kairi Sane enters next.
Match #2: Kairi Sane vs. Vanessa Borne
Kairi goes over here, but I’m liking that each time she’s on TV they’re managing to make Borne seem more and more credible. She hits Kairi with a Samoan Drop and crazy twisting suplex before Kairi goes on her run. Of note, Kairi picks up the win by use of a modified Boston Crab called “The Anchor”. No elbow drop here, which leads me to believe we’re heading towards Kairi vs. Shayna in Brooklyn.
Verdict: Thumbs Up – Solid match. No complaints.
Post-match, Sane cuts a promo on Shayna saying that she’s beaten Shayna before and will do it again. Sane is coming for the treasure – the NXT Women’s Championship.
Next week? By way of “breaking news”, Mauro tells us that we’re getting a Fatal Four Way between Kairi Sane, Nikki Cross, Candice LeRae, and Bianca Belair. The winner gets a shot against Baszler. Oh man, this is going to be Nikki’s last NXT match, isn’t it?
In 2 weeks? Aleister Black vs. Tommaso Ciampa for the NXT Championship.
Meanwhile, Aleister has just arrived at Full Sail and he’s… walking. Before entering the building, Gargano appears and tells Black that Ciampa can’t become the NXT Champion. Black kind of blows Gargano off and Johnny gets in his face and tells Black that Ciampa can’t win. Black tells Johnny he gets it and right now he just needs to let Black handle Ciampa. Aleister enters the building and is immediately attacked by Ciampa. Tommaso gives Aleister a draping DDT off a trainer’s table onto the concrete floor. Trainers rush to check on Black while Ciampa wanders off waving goodbye.
Back from break, we see Ciampa’s attack again and Mauro tells that Black has been taken to a “local medical facility”. Will Black still be able to defend the title? I guess we may find out more next week!
Next, Undisputed Era’s music hits and O’Reilly and Strong are out alone. O’Reilly, sadly, doesn’t play air guitar during the entrance. Moustache Mountain enter last.
Match #3: Moustache Mountain (c) vs. Undisputed Era (NXT Tag Team Championship Match)
Oh boy. This match. What we get here is easily one of the more compelling tag matches on a weekly episode in some time. Undisputed Era are on fire out of the gates and Strong ends up dropping Seven’s bad knee on the ring steps. From there, you get to agonize along with Seven as Strong and O’Reilly stop just short of dissecting and then amputating Seven’s leg. Even when it looks like that Seven has somehow gotten to a spot where he can hot tag Bate – O’Reilly cuts off Bate to prevent it. Eventually, the hot tag comes and Bate double airplane spins Kyle and Roderick in an impressive spot. Trainers are tending to Seven’s destroyed leg, but he pulls himself back up to the apron and unfortunately tags himself in after Bate gets taken out via double team attacks. It’s all over from there. O’Reilly locks in yet another heel hook and Bate actually picks up a towel. Seven tells him not to throw in the towel. Bate lets Seven suffer for a bit longer but finally has no choice and throws in the towel. New champs!
Verdict: Thumbs Up – Another “TakeOver quality” match we got on a weekly episode. Everyone played their role perfectly in this match.
Post-match, Undisputed Era quickly flee the ring with their title belts. Cole is out on the stage to celebrate with them and Bobby Fish even wanders out holding a trophy. So, did they give him a small trophy to carry so everyone in the faction has gold now? (edit: After WWE posted the photos from this show, it appears they give out small Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic trophies now as that was what Fish was holding) Kyle plays the belt like a guitar and finally everything at NXT feels normal again.
We go off the air on Undisputed Era celebrating on the stage.
