WWE NXT 12/25/13 Recap

It’s a “year in review” clip show with a William Regal vs. Antonio Cesaro match in the main event.

It’s Christmas! So, that means I’ll be taking a look at WWE NXT 12/25/13. This week’s show is a “year in review” sort of affair so don’t expect a ton of commentary until we get to our main event – Antonio Cesaro vs. William Regal. I’m definitely interested in seeing that match as NXT has been slow burning their feud for weeks now. So, let’s see if any of the video packages are worth mentioning!

WWE NXT 12/25/13 Recap

WWE. Then. Now. Forever. Standard NXT opening credits and we’re taped from (an empty) Full Sail. Renee Young welcomes us to “NXT Rewind”.

We get a video package on the opening of the WWE Performance Center.

After that, we get a video package about NXT Superstars who are now on the main roster. Big E cuts a brief promo on how his 2013 went.

Later tonight? William Regal vs. Antonio Cesaro.

Next, we get a promo from Cesaro. He puts Regal over for helping him get to the WWE, but says Regal had to know that this day would come. The day when there is only room for either Cesaro or Regal – but not both. Solid promo work from Cesaro to hype up this show’s only match.

Back from break, Renee sends us to a video package on the NXT Tag Team Championship tournament.

After that, we take a look at the NXT Women’s Championship tournament finals.

Next, Devin is backstage with Paige. Paige puts Emma over as a tough competitor but adds that she still hates her. Paige keeps reiterating that she’s “a wrestler” and cuts a promo on the main roster “divas”.

Bo Dallas wanders in to be interviewed by Devin next. Bo puts himself over as only he can. Bo sends us to a video package of him beating Big E for the NXT Championship.

Up next? A look at the future stars of NXT.

But first, here’s Bray Wyatt who cuts a Bray Wyatt promo that mentions NXT a few times.

After that, we’re back to Renee who sends us to a video package on the future stars of NXT. Aiden English, Mojo Rawley, Bayley, Tyler Breeze, Alexander Rusev, Sasha Banks, Corey Graves, and Sami Zayn are all featured.

Up next? Another video package. This one features all of the times main roster talent showed up at NXT.

Next, we get a promo from William Regal. Regal is great here and sounds like he’s prepared to die in the match tonight. A really good promo, that when combined with Cesaro’s earlier one makes this match feel really big.

Up next? A look at the NXT Match of the Year.

But first, The Shield cut in to cut a Shield promo.

Meanwhile, Renee is still talking in the ring and sends us to a video package on the Match of the Year – the Zayn vs. Cesaro 2 out of 3 Falls Match.

After the video package, Devin is backstage with Sami. Zayn says that he’s focused on Bo Dallas and becoming NXT Champion. But, he currently has a roadblock standing in his way – Leo Kruger. Zayn suggests that he and Kruger have a two out of three falls match next week.

Meanwhile, back in a (non-empty) Full Sail your announce team is Tom Phillips, Byron Saxton, and Tensai. Saxton cuts a promo on Cesaro and calls him a bully! Hey, Howard Finkel has been dusted off to do the ring announcements. Cesaro is out first to Jack Swagger’s music. Regal is out last.

Match #1: Antonio Cesaro vs. William Regal

As good as I expected. Regal sells himself short in the earlier promo as he may be in the “twilight” of his career but the guy can still go. Regal wrestles his typical style which is great because it complements Cesaro’s style perfectly. Lots of holds and stalemates to build up the early section of the match. Things start to go south for Regal when he starts trying to test strength with Cesaro. I doubt even a “in his prime” Regal could best Cesaro in that department. Cesaro takes the advantage for good after a chop block to Regal’s knee. From there, Cesaro systematically attacks the knee. Regal fires up for a brief comeback – focusing on taking out Cesaro’s arms. But, Cesaro¬†comes back from this, double stomps Regal’s head (!), and toys with Regal some more before ending the misery with the Neutralizer.

Verdict: Thumbs Up – A perfect combination of talents and I’m glad that timing worked out so Regal and Cesaro were able to cross paths like this.

Post-match, refs are helping Regal to the back and Cesaro is following them.

We go off the air on Cesaro shaking hands with Regal on the ramp.
