WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Drinking Game

We try to predict the results of the 2017 Royal Rumble event by way of drinking game rules.

It’s January, you know what that means. The Royal Rumble is upon us and here is your WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Drinking Game.

As usual, this game is presented as a fun way to try to predict the results of an upcoming WWE PPV. We obviously do not advocate actually playing this game due to the extreme nature of the challenge presented here. In other words, don’t try this at home.

Standard Turn Heel WWE PPV drinking game rules apply for the WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Drinking Game: If you’re playing on “Easy Mode” take a sip of beer or of a mixed drink when the game calls for it. If you’re playing on “Hardcore Mode” take a full shot of hard liquor or entire can/bottle of beer each time the game calls for it.

WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Drinking Game – Kickoff Show

First off, some general Royal Rumble Kickoff Show rules to get you nice and liquored up to handle a 2 hour kick off show (ugh!)

Take a shot:

Each time Jerry Lawler says something your Twitter feed derides him for

If Dolph Ziggler attempts to give Lawler another heart attack during the Kickoff Show

If we get a random Cruiserweight match on the Kickoff Show

If we get Ziggler vs. Crews and/or Kalisto on the Kickoff Show

If Baron Corbin banters with the panel

If Shawn Michaels insists he’s retired

If Shawn Michaels shills his new movie

If AJ Styles and Shawn Michaels have some sort of interaction on the Kickoff Show

Okay… on to the Kickoff Show matches

WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Drinking Game - Naomi, Nikki Bella, & Becky Lynch vs. Alexa Bliss, Natalya, & Mickie James

(WWE.com)

Nikki Bella, Naomi, & Becky Lynch vs. Alexa Bliss, Natalya, & Mickie James

Someone decided it would probably be a bad look to not feature the SmackDown Live women’s division on one of the “big four” shows so we get this six-woman match. It was announced on SmackDown as part of the main card and then quietly demoted to the Kickoff Show later in the week. What this match signifies is SmackDown’s success, and Raw’s failure, of building a women’s division that has feuds and story lines that exist independent of the title feud. This breaks down into the Nikki Bella / Natalya jealousy (ugh!) feud, Naomi challenging Alexa for the title this week after returning, and Mickie James wanting to knock the “women’s revolution” down a peg by screwing with Becky Lynch. I’m sure things will happen in this match that will evolve into a match or two for Elimination Chamber which is in just a few weeks. Alexa vs. Naomi and Mickie vs. Becky seem like the most likely pairings.

Take a shot:

If Natalya manages to get jumped and/or jump someone before the match actually starts

If Mickie James gets the win for the heel team

If Nikki Bella gets the win for the face team

Take 2 shots:

If someone on the face team turns on Becky

If Becky gets the win for the face team

If Alexa gets the win for the heel team

Take 3 shots:

If an action by Natalya prevents this match from actually happening

If this ends in a no contest brawl

If La Luchadora doesn’t make an appearance before, during, or after this match

Take 4 shots:

If La Luchadora appears

Take 5 shots:

If La Luchadora is unmasked and is revealed to be Eva Marie

If La Luchadora is unmasked and is revealed to be Tamina

If La Luchadora is unmasked and is revealed to be Emmalina

If La Luchadora is unmasked and is revealed to be James Ellsworth

Take 6 shots:

If La Luchadora is unmasked and is revealed to be someone from NXT

Take 7 shots:

If La Luchadora appears, but is not unmasked at the Royal Rumble

Finishing out: La Luchadora showing up seems almost like a given and I’ll be surprised if they don’t go to that well one more time here. Who wins doesn’t really matter since this is a six-woman match. If anything, this really serves to stoke the feuds for Elimination Chamber and WrestleMania since as of now SmackDown Live has no PPV booked for March. I suppose my money is on the faces winning since the heel team can take a loss here without it really impacting anything title-wise.

WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Drinking Game - Sasha Banks vs. Nia Jax

(WWE.com)

Sasha Banks vs. Nia Jax

Sasha Banks is legit injured often enough that I’m not even sure if her current “injury” angle is a shoot thing or a work. I mean, I imagine it’s a work since she’s got this match, but they really book her strange by not having her work matches on TV and now having her wearing a knee brace all of the time. Anyway, the story here is that Nia Jax is a badass and can toss around tiny women like Sasha Banks at will. Nia took out Sasha before Raw a few weeks and then Sasha hobbled out with a crutch, which she didn’t need (?), and then pummeled Nia with said crutch. That was enough to get this feud a Royal Rumble Kickoff show match and so here we are.

Take a shot:

If Sasha sells the knee for the entire match

Each time Sasha does something that makes you want to look away from the screen in fear

Take 2 shots:

If Sasha wins by pinfall

If Nia wins by pinfall

If Sasha wins by count out or DQ

Take 3 shots:

If Sasha manages to tap Jax out

Take 4 shots:

If any Horsewomen show up to help out Sasha

Take 5 shots:

If Tamina is debuted as the next challenge for Nia during or after the match

Finishing out: There isn’t really much to this match so, again, it doesn’t really matter who wins here. Raw isn’t doing much of anything with their women, beyond whoever Charlotte works for the title, so I’m not super optimistic no matter who wins here that anything really comes from this. I’ll go with Sasha wins by count out or DQ, but the post-match leads to a Nia beat down and Tamina debuts to save her former Team B.A.D. cohort and begin a feud with Jax.

WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Drinking Game - Sheamus & Cesaro vs. Gallows & Anderson

(WWE.com)

Cesaro & Sheamus (c) vs. Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson (Two Refs at Ringside)

Oh man, who cares! Seriously, the Sheasaro title reign has made me actually dread Cesaro being on my TV which is a sad thing. Likewise, WWE has done Gallows & Anderson zero favors in looking like a serious tag team. Every time they get close to finally establishing them, we take three steps back. Gallows and Anderson beat Sheasaro on Raw, but lo, the ref did not see it. So, we now have TWO REFS AT RINGSIDE TO TRY TO CONTAIN THE CHAOS!!11!11!

Take a shot:

If at least one ref gets bumped and knocked out

If a Cesaro uppercut opens someone up

If a “hot asian wife” sign is shown during the match

Chug:

For the duration of any and all Cesaro Swings

Take 2 shots:

If neither ref is bumped during the match

If Gallows refers to anything and adds “ski” at the end

If Anderson calls anyone a “good brother”

If Sheamus asks the crowd if they are entertained

Take 3 shots:

If a miscommunication between Sheamus and Cesaro leads to them losing the match

If The Club finally get legitimized in the WWE by winning the titles

Take 4 shots:

If Sheasaro retain the titles and continue their dispassionate reign for another month

Take 5 shots:

If AJ Styles helps his “good brothers” win the titles

Take 6 shots:

If they blow a Finn Balor appearance by having him help The Club win

Finishing out: The Club needs to win here. Which means, they might? I’d normally say that Cesaro & Sheamus retain, but here they could lose the titles on the Kickoff and then have to work the Rumble match together. So, it’s far more interesting to assume that they drop the titles here and go on to screw each other over in the Rumble match. Of course, then we’ll get another four months of Cesaro vs. Sheamus matches on Raw but maybe Foley can book them in a Best of 15. I doubt WWE pulls the trigger on a Styles, or even less likely Balor, run in here, but I see the Good Brothers leaving with the belts by hook or by crook.

Okay, now onto the four hour main card.

WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Drinking Game

WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Drinking Game - Rich Swann vs. Neville

(WWE.com)

Rich Swann (c) vs. Neville (WWE Cruiserweight Championship match)

Heel Neville has been a thing of beauty. Seriously, his run has been astounding ever since he’s returned and him facing Swann for the title at the Rumble has been a given ever since he laid everyone out at Roadblock. Swann has had a solid reign up to this point and, at least on 205 Live, WWE has done an adequate job of building up the feud between these two guys. This has a real chance of being the “match of the night” since the main is a gimmick battle royal and we’ve already seen Styles / Cena a few times before and I don’t know if they can top that SummerSlam match from last year.

Take a shot:

If Neville stares down a child on the aisle during his entrance

If Neville denies the crowd the Red Arrow

If Neville finds an excuse to complain about America

If this ends up match of the night

Take 2 shots:

If any other Cruiserweights get involved in the match

If Neville taps Swann out with the Rings of Saturn

Take 3 shots:

If Neville wins by way of superplex

Take 4 shots:

If Swann pulls off an upset and retains by pinfall

Finishing out: Neville wins and becomes King of the Cruiserweights. At least for now. I can’t see any reason why they’d build Neville up and then have him lose on a big stage like the Royal Rumble. He really seems like the potential shot in the arm that the division needs to get more eyeballs since the rumors are that people are not watching 205 Live in the droves that WWE had hoped.

WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Drinking Game - Charlotte Flair vs. Bayley

(WWE.com)

Charlotte Flair (c) vs. Bayley (WWE Raw Women’s Championship match)

WWE has done an okay job of building this one up but it still feels like it is in the infancy stage of the program. With Fastlane and Mania still to come, I’ll be surprised if they pull the trigger on a Bayley title win here. The rumors I’ve seen say we’re getting a Bayley / Charlotte / Nia / Sasha Fatal Four Way at Mania and Sasha / Bayley is set for SummerSlam in an attempt to revisit the magic of Sasha / Bayley at the first TakeOver Brooklyn. But, that’s a long way off still. In the here and now, we have Charlotte underestimating Bayley as “no more than a fan” and running a “has never lost on PPV” gimmick.

Take a shot:

If Charlotte is announced as “Charlotte Flair”

If Ric Flair shows up

Each time Charlotte says “woo”

If Charlotte does that moonsault to the outside spot

Take 2 shots:

If Charlotte is announced as “Charlotte”

If Ric Flair shows up and helps / hugs Bayley

If Charlotte remains undefeated on PPV

Take 3 shots:

If Ric Flair shows up and helps his daughter

If Sasha Banks and/or Nia Jax somehow factor into this match

Take 4 shots and hug the person sitting next to you:

If Bayley wins her first main roster title

Finish the bottle:

If the drought ends and Emmalina debuts here

Finishing out: Charlotte retains here. All rumored future booking plans seem to point to either her or Sasha as champion so Bayley taking the title here so early into their feud doesn’t make a ton of sense. I mean, this is the Raw women’s title though, we could swap the title back a half-dozen times between now and Fastlane, but I don’t see them ending the Charlotte winning streak just yet.

WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Drinking Game - Kevin Owens vs. Roman Reigns

(WWE.com)

Kevin Owens (c) vs. Roman Reigns (Chris Jericho is Suspended Above the Ring in a Shark Cage) (WWE Universal Championship match)

Hey, it’s that feud that seems like it’s been going on forever… JeriKO vs. Reigns and/or Rollins. Foley has “evened the odds” here by having Jericho get locked in the shark cage. So, there’s that. Owens’ run was obviously not planned, due to the Balor injury, and I have the distinct feeling this run with Jericho was not supposed to also involve the Universal title, but hey, Jericho got a grand slam championship out of it so no real complaints from this guy. As of press time, neither of these guys are in the Rumble, but there are still 8 slots open.

Take a shot:

If Jericho refers to himself as a “sexy piñata”

If Jericho actively adds anyone to the list while in the shark cage

If the shark cage is not very effective

If KO holds a chinlock for over one minute

If the crowd mostly boos Roman during his entrance

Take 2 shots:

If KO holds a chinlock for over three minutes

Each time Roman hits someone with a Superman Punch

For each cannonball that KO does

Take 3 shots:

If Triple H gets involved at any point…

… and again if this leads to Seth Rollins getting involved

If Owens escapes this match and retains the Universal title

Take 4 shots:

If the crowd mostly cheers Reigns during his entrance

Take 5 shots:

If Roman goes over strong with the Spear

Take 6 shots:

If Reigns ends up in the shark cage at the end of the match

Finishing up: This match seems tailor-made for Reigns to become the Universal champion. I could easily see Roman winning and Owens getting one of the last spots in the Rumble as a consolation prize. The one outlier that would keep the title off Reigns is if they position him versus the Undertaker for Mania, I don’t see the title really needing to be involved there. Otherwise, it looks like “THE guy” goes over here. Of course, if the Triple H / Rollins situation spills over into this match now that Rollins is out of the Rumble match, all bets are off.

WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Drinking Game - AJ Styles vs. John Cena

(WWE.com)

AJ Styles (c) vs. John Cena (WWE Championship match)

The story here has been the returning Cena declaring himself a title challenger because he’s John Cena, recognize. AJ has had a great run, easily better than Owens’ run on Raw, but it feels like his time is running out as the “champ that runs the camp”. Internet rumors speculate AJ will be facing Shane McMahon at Mania and the title will be off of him by then, but will they pull the trigger and put the belt on Cena here or wait until Elimination Chamber to take the title off of Styles?

Take a shot:

If Cena receives a mixed reaction

For each “soccer mom” chant that breaks out

If Cena loses to “some guy from Atlanta”

If this match isn’t quite as spectacular as their SummerSlam 2016 match

Chug:

For the duration of any and all “let’s go Cena / Cena sucks” chants

Take 2 shots:

For each Styles Clash tease

For each AA tease

If Shane McMahon gets involved in the match

If the Club get involved in the match

If AJ retains to head to Elimination Chamber as the champ

Take 3 shots:

If Samoa Joe gets involved in the match

Take 4 shots:

If Cena wins and ties Ric Flair for number of world titles

Finishing out: I feel like that their feud last year had a lot more fire. This one has largely been AJ saying Cena is a part-timer and Cena saying he’s Cena so he’s the best and can do whatever he wants. It almost seems like they just slammed these two together to have a marquee match for Royal Rumble even if there wasn’t really time to build a reason for the match to happen. I’m leaning towards AJ retaining here, and, by extension, he and Cena both being in the Elimination Chamber main event field. Of course, Samoa Joe is rumored to debut on this show in some fashion, and while a Rumble match debut would be good, him showing up to lay out Cena (either after Cena wins the title, or not) would be a more exciting move if they’re destined to feud regardless.

WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Drinking Game - Royal Rumble Match Participants

(WWE.com)

Royal Rumble Match

This is the first year without a universally agreed upon likely winner. So far I’ve seen legit enough rumors to believe that Taker, Strowman, Orton, Reigns (who isn’t even officially in the match as of now), Wyatt, Balor, and Goldberg could all be winning. Personally? I like the Orton theory so he and Wyatt can feud over the title. But of course, we’ll see on Sunday. It’s the Royal Rumble. Anything can happen.

Undertaker – 1 shot

Randy Orton – 1 shot

Bray Wyatt – 2 shots

Finishing out: I’m leaning towards the “Orton wins the Rumble and eventually faces Wyatt for the title at Mania” scenario. Most of the things on the Raw side of the show don’t need a Royal Rumble match winner as an excuse to have a Mania match. Even still, I could be wildly wrong as this has definitely been a tough Royal Rumble to predict.

So, there you have the WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Drinking Game. We’ll be live tweeting during the show over on Twitter at our Twitter account, and we’ll have a full recap with commentary after the show ends on Sunday evening.
